What a competition! There were some heavy hitters in attendance from overseas, so it was an honor to stand on the podium at Flatland Battleground.
The contest had a vibe that you don’t always get with BMX comps these days. The riding surface was pretty much perfect, which I think immediately puts all the riders in a good mood. Add lots of practice time, and it kind of just felt like a fun session with the guys.
But make no mistake, when the contest starts the battle is on.
The contest format consisted of each rider getting two runs, but only your best run counts. This allows riders to either “go for it” both runs or do a “safety” run. My first run was not that great. It started with a crash and ended with a crash. Not good.
Luckily it was best run counts. I felt like the underdog after that lousy first run, and I could feel the crowd pulling for me. I used that energy to hit all my tricks and get some sweet redemption.
I do not take standing on the podium for granted these days. Any time you get to ride with the top guys in the world is a special moment. To stand on the podium with them makes it that much better.
